When it comes to spiritual growth, a good starting place is what is known as the spiritual disciplines. Though there are many of them, here are three to start with. You can add others as you become more disciplined.

The most important place to start with is with the reading of Scripture. Because the Bible is the Word of God, we can expect to hear His voice speaking through his written word. If we want to grow closer to God, it is necessary to listen when he speaks. Though the Bible was written over 2000 years ago, daily reading can help us tune in to what God was saying both to his ancient people and to his people today.

The second spiritual discipline to cultivate is prayer. Charles Spurge on called prayer a “spiritual transaction with the Creator of Heaven and Earth.” Prayer is our means of communication with God. It can be broken down into four basic components that spell out the acronym A.C.T.S.

The first component of prayer is “Adoration” – recognizing and worshiping God for who he is. The “C” stands for “confession,” which means telling God about your sin and agreeing with God about its seriousness. “T” is for “thanksgiving” in which we offer our profound thanks to God for what he has done for us and in us. Finally, “S” stands for “supplication” which means bringing our requests to God.

Not all prayers have to include ever one of these components every time, but as a general structure, they are a good starting point to make our prayers more comprehensive.

Third, we must engage in worship. Worship consists of focusing on and offering a response to who God is and what he has done for us. According to Jesus, it is to be done in “Spirit and in truth”, meaning that we must have the Holy Spirit within us and that our worship must be done according to the truth of Scripture.

There are a number of other spiritual disciplines which you can read about. You can also contact a Christian counselor in Santa Monica. The counselors at Santa Monica Christian Counseling can come alongside you and help you implement spiritual disciplines in your life so that you can experience true spiritual development.

If you ask any ten people to define “spiritual awakening” you are likely to get twelve different answers. However, most definitions view spiritual awakening in terms that conflict with the teaching of the Bible.

The Bible teaches that all people are born dead in sin and unable to help themselves. When a person is made spiritually alive by the Holy Spirit and turns from their sin to love and serve the living God, we call this a spiritual awakening.

The counselors at Santa Monica Christian Counseling can help you develop a spiritual development plan that is right for you. This plan will consist of the spiritual goals that you and your counselor have established along with the steps to achieve them.

It is important to have a spiritual development plan. It will keep you focused on the next thing and provide you with a road map to get to the place you want to be in your spiritual life.

The Christian life is full of ups and downs, and while perfection will never be achieved in this life, general wellness can be achieved. Spiritual wellness means having a healthy relationship with God and involves repentance from sin, growth in love to God, and increasing holiness of life.

Though everyone is at a different level of maturity, we should recognize that the Lord is patient and kind towards us as we fight to get rid of sin in our lives and grow in grace and knowledge of him. Spiritual wellness means being in right relationship with God and growing closer to him as we walk through this life.

Spiritual development is a worthy pursuit that, while not easy, is possible if you are committed.
